Design Concept
Since guests will spend as much time outside as inside, the concept was to create a feeling of flow from indoors to outdoors. Colors were chosen that would blend in with nature. Exotic woods, stone flooring, local art, and contemporary furniture complete the environment.
The theme of "Fire and Water" found throughout the resort begins at the open-air Lobby with a reflective "Poem Stone" water feature that serves as the spiritual core of the resort. The Lobby has a commanding view of the beaches, pool area, and resort beyond. The butterfly-style roof adds volume to the space and with the openness of the Lobby guests feel that they are still outdoors. Descending down the Grand Stair to the open-air bar, guests are treated to a wall of gold mosaic glass tiles that beautifully reflects the setting sun.
Adjacent to the Lobby is the awe-inspiring spa. The spa has a covered indoor/outdoor lobby which flows from the central exterior arrival cul de sac. A two-story rainwater wall, part of a two-story lounge for relaxing both before and after treatments, recreates the soothing sound of rain from the country's tropical rainforests. Guests can expect a full complement of treatment rooms offering traditional massages, wet treatments, a Vichy shower, a private couple's treatment room with a whirlpool, sauna, and body showers. Another post-treatment option is outdoor terraces with cold-plunge and wading pools with views that overlook the resort pools and beach. The golden hue of the wood used throughout the space combined with fresh green mosaic tile creates a feeling of warmth and relaxation.
The concept for the guestrooms was to mimic tree houses and the interior spaces here integrate with the resort's natural setting by using materials such as local hardwood for the floors, limestone in the bathrooms, and coconut wood, woven cane, and bamboo for several of the furniture pieces. Guestrooms have their own outdoor terrace and the bathrooms each have a soaking-tub from which guests can enjoy views of the ocean and gardens. Fabrics are woven and hand-block-printed cottons in colors inspired by the local floral and fauna. Flat weave hand-woven rugs are used to soften the space and add color and texture.
The Suites are set into the existing hillside and foliage. The high ceilings and spectacular views create the feeling of being up in an aerie. Most of the suites have their own plunge-pool and exterior deck for dining and sunbathing. The interior finishes are hand-tufted wool area rugs, custom furnishings fabricated with mother-of-pearl and coconut shell inlay, large walk-in closets and his-and-her vanities. The color schemes range from softly washed neutrals inspired by the seashells on the beach to the deep purples and lush greens of the jungle. Each suite has its own fabric and furnishings scheme to create a feeling of a private residence.
