Program

The resort at Whistler is a unique property for Four Seasons as it represents one of the first ski resorts for the company and was therefore designed to set a new standard for luxury winter accommodations.

Known primarily as a winter resort destination, Whistler is also very popular as a summer activities retreat. The challenge for the designers was to develop a resort not solely themed for winter, but one that would also be comfortable and sophisticated enough for summer guests visiting the area.

Design Concept

The basic design concept sprung mainly from the architects’ Arts and Crafts inspired forms and details.  With its close proximity to the city of Vancouver, the project also took on an urbane quality to celebrate Vancouver’s sophisticated spirit.  “Rustic Modern” details, furnishings, and finishes were introduced to make the connection to the region’s central business and financial core.

Finished in unique Australian Eucalyptus wood paneling and a variety of quartzite, granite, and limestone, the lobby and its fireplace surround the guests in warmth, color, and texture.  Artwork, custom bronze decorative screens by noted local sculptor David Robinson, and decorative metal architectural details finish the theme in a modern interpretation of a familiar tradition.  The main lobby area is adjacent to a library lounge, which includes another fireplace and window seat with views over the property’s landscaped stream and courtyard, providing a comfortable area for relaxing or waiting for friends.  Down the grand stair and past the commissioned painting by renowned Canadian artist Gordon Smith, the first level houses the spa, lounge/après ski bar, restaurant, retail shops, and ballroom/meeting room facilities.

The bar and adjoining Restaurant are accented in handsome walnut burl wood panels complimented by end grain wood flooring, nickel, and stone. Two fireplaces, one indoor and one out, are mimicked by backlit onyx panels on walls and bar. The spa in the West Building houses steam and treatment rooms, cardio/aerobics area, and heated outdoor swimming pool. Guestrooms and suites contain elements of cherry stained wood millwork, limestone floors, quartzite stone bath walls, and wood and stone clad gas-burning fireplaces.
